Announcing our new Academic Partner, The Ohio State University!

A warm welcome to our newest Academic partner, The Ohio State University!

NIHD was founded to create a place for innovation to flourish. The nurses involved in the NIHD have all been leaders in the innovation of their domain: Nursing and Design. As the organization has grown, so too have the membership leaders to include all those professionals interested in improving the environment for patients, families and caregivers. It is a passionate group working in academia, policy, research, and practice.

It is this innovation that is in alignment with The Ohio State University College of Nursing’s Center for Healthcare Innovation and Leadership. Our mission is to develop innovative and entrepreneurial-minded leaders who transform systems to promote the highest levels of well-being among individuals, organizations, and communities. This is done through innovative programming, coaching, fostering an entrepreneurial mindset, commitment to positive disruption and human centered design. Our core values: Shared Purpose, Risk-taking, Transformative yet disciplined, Interprofessional collaboration, Wellness, and Boldness can provide resources through a wide range of environments including virtual, simulated and in-person environments.

Our clinical practice team is comprised of leaders in all stages of patient and family care from the most acute in critical care to outpatient and community practice including Federally Funded Community Health Centers to Outpatient Rehabilitation and clinics to home care settings. This experience provides the foundation of understanding the role of the environment and allows for a variety of education opportunities for NIHD members.

Our Center for Healthcare Innovation provides expertise in high performing and best practices within organizations, leadership, culture and communication in health care systems, and health care policy. Additionally, we have expertise in utilizing technology to measure outcomes, evidence-based practice, and fundamentals of Design Thinking.

Our design experience.

Our design experience includes teaching about design and offering the students, colleagues, and faculty expertise in several ways. Our team is comprised of designers and clinicians with work in built environment and human centered design. One of our team members has a specialization in aging in design research and development and another has worked as a nurse designer on a multitude of inpatient, outpatient, and residential design projects.

Our team excels in the clinical, practice, education, and design domains.

We also specialize in design and development of processes, products and more through our innovation studio. The Innovation Studio exists to foster interprofessional collaboration in creating healthcare solutions. We can test and pilot the ideas for problems such as the Alzheimer’s and Related Dementia Research Program for a healthcare product, service or software with dedicated resources, mentors, and tools to help.

On the horizon.

We can support NIHD through our future work with the members for the quality and safe delivery of care for patients, families, and caregivers. We can do this through our new Immersive Simulation Lab, using augmented, virtual, and mixed reality to allow members / participants to gain full understanding of fundamental skills of spatial and clinical relationships.

We look forward to working with NIHD and its members to increase opportunities for design and partner to be a visionary on all levels.
