Preview NIHD's Sponsored Clinical Track at HCD.

This Clinical Perspectives Track is carefully curated by NIHD members to offer programs that focus on clinical perspectives and knowledge as they relate to healthcare design. These programs are the only sessions that are CE-certified for nursing clinicians, but also applicable to all attendees. Register for these tracks through your HCD registration.

E23 Caregiver Wellness: Supporting Clinicians through Evidence-based Design.

This session provides an in-depth review of elements in the built environment that impact healthcare professionals, care delivery and well-being. More than ever, healthcare professionals are challenged to care for patients at the expense of their own wellbeing. The impact of the physical characteristics of the healthcare professionals’ work environment has been elevated for critical examination and intervention. Presenters will discuss current research exploring the built environment’s impact on the wellbeing of healthcare professionals, and how design and healthcare professionals can leverage research to improve their work environment. Practical applications and determining return on investment for these types of design interventions will also be shared.

E33 Operational Transformation: The Design and Integration of Maternity Services.

Indiana University Health (IU Health) strategically relocated maternity and newborn health services to help reduce infant mortality. As they looked to upgrade their healthcare facilities, a spotlight was placed on the renovation of four floors at Riley Hospital for Children, linking maternity and pediatric services for a complete continuum of care. The multidisciplinary patient care delivery approach provides the total care of obstetric and newborn patients, including routine care, care of complex medical conditions, and obstetrical complications. The design integrates key operational processes supporting the project’s guiding principles that include: high quality/safe care, holistic/family-focused care, design that facilitates multidisciplinary communication and learning, and technology.

Presented by:

Teri Joy RN, CEN, TCRN, EDAC, Senior Healthcare Operations Planner, BSA Life Structures [NIHD MEMBER]

Erin Kirby MSN, MBA, RNC-OB, NE-BC, Clinical Director Maternity Services, Indiana University Health

E63-Using Simulations During Mock-ups to Identify Design Issues

In 2020, Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital Stanford began the redesign and renovation of its NICU spaces. Mock-ups were built in 2021 to confirm the final design. As part of the preparation, challenging simulated clinical events, such as the resuscitation of preterm twins, proceeded in real time. Upon their conclusion, technical debriefings were conducted to elicit which aspects of the design helped or hindered individual and team performance, followed by brainstorming to develop effective solutions to identified problems. These speakers will share their experiences, best practices, and lessons learned, including the value inherent in having an interdisciplinary team onsite during the simulations
