PDC STUDENT CHALLENGE 2023 | Phoenix, AZ

NIHD sponsored post-graduate nursing students from Montana State University Mark and Robyn Jones College of Nursing to join the PDC Student Challenge in Phoenix, AZ! We have been supporters of the PDC Student Challenge in 2018, 2019 and 2022, sponsoring graduate nursing students to participate in a hospital design challenge with teams of architecture, engineering, nurses and construction management students from across the nation!

2023 Healthcare Design Conference + Expo | New Orleans, LA

Our member dinner was held at Grand Isle Restaurant and was a lively “kick-off” to HCD!

With over 50 participants, our pre-conference workshop, R.A.I.S.E. The Bar for Healthcare Design Through Research and Evidence empowered diverse members of the healthcare design team to explore the prismatic spectrum of research and evidence-informed/evidence-based design through creating a culture of inquiry, fostering critical appraisal skills, and promoting translation to project scope. Attendees worked through virtual escape rooms to conclude.

125+ sponsors, partners and members networked and formed new relationships at our annual reception. The NIHD Foundation’s inaugural Art Auction was held raised funds to support future NIHD member initiatives.

10 Abstracts were presented in the Clinical Perspectives track. Up to 10 hours of continuing nursing professional development were awarded to RN’s attending.

2022 Healthcare Design Conference + Expo | San Antonio, TX

Members enjoyed a fabulous evening in the private Wine Cellar at Zinc Bistro & Bar, where many members gathered to reconnect and meet new friends before the commencement of the conference.

With over 60 participants, our pre-conference workshop, ROI of the Clinical Voice in Healthcare Design: How to Get it and What It's Worth in the Quest for Better Designs, challenged us to rethink the participants needed during the design process. NIHD Board member Kate Newcomb-DeSanto MSN, RN, MSW, EDAC delivered the keynote and set the stage for participants to share how best to leverage the clinical voice from the beginning of the design process. We are so thankful for our rock star panel of Sarah Francis MSN, RN, NEA-BC, EDAC, Juliet L. Rogers, PhD, MPH, and Cathy Massey RN, BSN, MSN, EDAC for sharing their perspectives on the value of involving clinicians in the design process.

PDC STUDENT CHALLENGE 2022 | New Orleans, LA

NIHD sponsored 4 graduate nursing students from Louisiana State University (LSU) to participate in the challenge. When board member Faith Bontrager, NIHD Board Member for Education arrived at the PDC Summit student challenge, spirits were high, although students later revealed their expectations were fuzzy. A 48-hour design challenge?  It was “good” that nurses were involved, but that included answering a few questions while the designers, engineers, and construction managers worked, right?

Our workshop - Post Occupancy Evaluation: The Human Connection- How does the building work for the people? was well attended. Attendees learned POE 101, heard from a panel of experts, and were engaged by experienced facilitators to explore how to introduce the intent of a POE at the start of the project and plan for it throughout the project phases.

Inaugural International Nursing Conference for Excellence in Healthcare Design: HISTORY, DESIGN AND INNOVATION

Hosted by Clemson University Academy of Nursing, held on August 14-17, 2019 in Greenville, South Carolina. Two NIHD members served as co-chairs for the conference, and 10 NIHD members participated on the planning committee. 15 NIHD members gave presentations. The keynote address was given by NIHD member, Jan Stichler DNS, RN NEA-BCr, EDAC, FACHE, FAAN. NIHD hosted the cocktail reception for the poster reception. The 2nd Annual conference will be held July 11-13 2021.

PDC STUDENT CHALLENGE 2019 | Phoenix, AZ

NIHD was proud to sponsor 4 graduate nursing students from The University of Arizona to participate in a hospital design challenge with teams of architecture, engineering, nurses and construction management students from across the nation as part of the Planning, Design and Construction (PDC) Design Summit in Phoenix, AZ. The nursing students contributed greatly by determining nurse staffing models, establishing nurse to patient ratios, calculating staffing budgets and engaging with students from other disciplines to establish workflow in a micro-hospital setting.

Our annual member dinner was held on the outdoor patio of The Arrogant Butcher restaurant with plenty of networking opportunities. The current growth and fiscal health of the organization with member feedback was discussed.

NIHD’s Transition Planning Workshop was interactive, engaging and fun, taking participants through various phases of a project. SOLD OUT with over 60 attendees. 4 CEU hours were given for RN’s attending this session.

NIHD recognized several members for their industry leadership and outstanding contributions to NIHD in the past 12 months. Kathy Okland RN, MPH, EDAC was the recipient of our second annual Leadership Award, and our first annual Member Award was given to Kris Krail MPH, RN, FACHE, PMP. NIHD also recognized were our first Registry of Fellows inductee’s.

The annual meeting and dinner were held at the Gaylord Palms Resort & Convention Center. At the member meeting, we shared our plans to restructure current committees into focused task forces as well as a review of the growth and fiscal health of our organization.

In collaboration with Stantec we conducted the workshop “Mock It and They Will Come - The Architectural and Clinical Aspects of Exam Room Concepts.” 60 participants explored exam room design. The team built full-scale cardboard mock-ups that were displayed throughout the conference. A total of 4 CEU hours were awarded to RN’s attending all this session. 

This years reception had a fantastic turn-out with our second annual Silent Auction to benefit the NIHD Foundation. We honored Debbie Gregory, recipient of our first annual Leadership Award, as well as Dr. Jeri Brittin, recipient of the 2017 Lady with the Lamp Research Grant. Also honored was outgoing President, Yolanda Keys.

The annual meeting and dinner were held at a nearby restaurant. President Susan Silverman toasted and thanked all board and members for their support and contribution during 2016, a year of significant growth for the organization.

Led by Oriana Beaudet, DNP, and assisted by a team of Teri Oelrich, Kathy Okland and Dottie Bowen, this years workshop featured innovation with a thought-provoking presentation by Oriana. Hands-on interdisciplinary projects, incorporated survey ideas from participants. Creative stations were placed throughout to encourage innovative thinking along with photo stations for fun and social media sharing. There were prizes given with a spirit of teamwork and excitement.

The reception was enhanced by a silent auction. Jaynelle Stichler, DNS, RN, NEA-BC, EDAC, FACHE, FAAN and Kirk Hamilton FAIA, FACHA, EDAC were honored in recognition of their HCD Innovators Award, the first time a Nurse has received this prestigious award. Also honored was outgoing President, Susan Silverman.
