Description: Indoor air quality, and infection prevention in general, has always been high on healthcare facilities’ agenda in protecting patients, staff, and visitors from the risk of infection. Moreover, regulatory authorities and standards-setting organizations such as the CDC, the Joint Commission, ANSI/ASHRAE/ASHE provide a substantial amount of guidance, as well as a few requirements, on these issues. And, hospitals in fact spend substantial resources on a wide-array of solutions addressing, and hopefully mitigating, the risk associated with surfaces, air, and water in their facilities. But, there are substantial challenges in implementing solutions that are both effective and efficient, and many of the assumptions underlying hospitals’ confidence in their various approaches have not been tested in a practical environment. The following issues may be partly responsible for causing these gaps:

1. HAIs caused by the environment of care are not tracked in the same way HAIs caused by some form of intervention;
2. The amount of information and number of products targeting disinfection is huge and growing substantially in light of COVID-19;
3. Hospitals have limited resources to vet the many technical claims made by vendors as well as investigate the science behind these claims; and,
4. Hospitals have a limited set of tools available to measure the effectiveness of cleaning and disinfection - in a comprehensive and timely manner.

Our moderator Harry Pliskin, President of Atreo, will engage in a conversation with our panelists to discuss the challenges hospitals face in addressing these gaps in risk mitigation.
