Debbie Gregory and Laura Hayes first glimpsed a vision of the importance of nurses gaining a greater understanding of the healthcare design and construction process in 2005. They were compelled to bring more collaboration and education between the design and construction community and the clinical community. Debbie and Laura identified many communication gaps between the design and clinical team. They began with an educational curriculum for nurses to help them understand the design and construction process and apply that to specific clinical settings. Nurses began to contact the NIHD from Australia to British Columbia asking for more information and education. The “NIHD Connection” and membership was launched to provide effective tools, education, collaboration, and connection for this growing community of professionals. Architects, Contractors, Facility Managers, Hospital Administrators and Clinicians have become involved and want to impact this new collaborative relationship that will facilitate trust, respect, shared goals, improved clinical work environments and ultimately patient outcomes. Debbie Gregory has experience as a registered nurse, an interior designer, a research nurse, and medical writer. Laura Hayes has experience in operations, project management, organizational strategies, workflow and process analysis.
