Inspiring Nurses...Nurses Making a Difference

Cheryl Herbert RN
President, Dublin Methodist Hospital

As surrounding communities grow around Dublin, Ohio, OhioHealth is scheduled to open a new hospital in October 2007. Cheryl Herbert, RN is shaping the future in her leadership and innovative ideas in the design and construction of this state of the art facility. Herbert’s background in nursing gives her insight into the needs of patients and staff with regard to designing this new facility. She worked with multidisciplinary advisory teams to provide input and guidance in the hospital’s design. Herbert is working with the Pebble Project of the Center for Health Design, a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grantee. They have partnered to demonstrate how design can improve the quality of care, enhance productivity and operational efficiency and increase staff satisfaction and retention.

Design ideas incorporated at Dublin Methodist:

  • Small gathering stations where nurses use computerized charting

  • Quiet spaces for staff for breaks/respite

  • New organization culture empowering “servant leadership”

  • Family centered rooms

  • Acuity adaptable rooms
