Mary Ann Derr, RN,MBA

Over the course of more than twenty years Mary Ann Derr has worked as a registered nurse in many hospitals and clinical specialty areas including med-surg, pediatrics, intensive care, emergency medicine, and rehabilitation.  She has also worked as a director of nursing exposing her to a variety of environments, which strengthens her ability to relate to the needs of healthcare providers, families, patients, and business owners.  Mary Ann served as a Lieutenant in the United States Navy and was active duty during Desert Shield and Desert Storm.  She has also been appointed to the Judge Advocate General Corps (JAG) as an expert witness for medical cases.  

Mary Ann worked with a team that developed a teamwork-training program that has been used in hospitals all around the world to help them decrease errors and improve safety. She has applied the clinical perspective as well to the lean construction process while leading the health care leadership team for Messer Construction in Cincinnati, Ohio. 

Her current role at Director of Research and Development for the Nursing Institute for Healthcare Design will utilize her wide range of skills and expertise to enhance the nursing community being developed regarding healthcare design and construction.

As a faculty member of American Society of Healthcare Engineering, Mary Ann presents in professional conferences on various topics relating to quality, safety, and predictable results in health care construction.  Her training is built on best practices in health care construction with an emphasis on infection control from the clinical perspective.   Mary Ann engages clinicians, administration, and designers and builders to better collaborate.  She is an advocate and “communication conduit” for critical elements that contribute to safety, quality and time and cost savings in health care construction projects.
